Engler-Friedlaender Memorial Trophy

In July of 1998, the American Hanoverian Society saw the passing of two of its most prominent members in former President Hermann Friedlaender and long-time board member Dr. Reto Engler. Each in his own way served the Society with distinction for many years. That fall, John and Tracy Weyl, owners of Maplewood Farm in Lexington, Ky., approached the AHS with a generous offer to memorialize Mr. Friedlaender and Dr. Engler through the creation and donation to the Society of a unique perpetual trophy. Created by world-renowned artist Karen Kasper, the Engler-Friedlaender Memorial Trophy is a one-of-a-kind work of art. Created in relief bronze, it features a montage of a mare going through her inspection and mare performance test.

At the specific request of Mr. and Mrs. Weyl, the trophy is awarded each year to the Hanoverian mare that achieves the highest mare performance test score during the annual inspections. During AHS’s 1999 annual meeting held in Lexington, Ky., John was on hand to personally present this beautiful trophy to Nancy Gooding, owner of the inaugural winner, EM Gretchen PCH. The full list of recipients is as follows:

Dressage at Devon Perpetual

In addition to the trophies that are awarded annually by AHS through its comprehensive awards program, AHS is also associated with one of the most coveted trophies awarded each September at Dressage at Devon. Based at the show grounds in Devon, Pennsylvania, Dressage at Devon, or “DAD” as it is fondly known, has grown in stature each year since its inception in 1975. Incorporating three days of breed classes in conjunction with one of this nation’s premier dressage events, DAD presents the largest breed show in the western hemisphere.

Each year, breeders large and small from all corners of North America descend upon Devon’s showgrounds for three days of exciting and intense breed competition. In 1990, Priscilla Hanford, then AHS vice president, generously commissioned a beautiful bronze of a Hanoverian mare accompanied by an equally exquisite foal to be presented as a perpetual trophy at Devon. This unique work of art created by artist Karin Natsch Leary is entitled “American Hanoverians” and was first awarded in 1992.

The Dressage at Devon American Hanoverian Society trophy is awarded to the highest placing eligible Hanoverian horse in the open breed classes. An eligible Hanoverian is one that has been either registered by AHS or is a foreign Hanoverian that has been recorded by AHS. In addition, the owner of the horse must be a current-year AHS member. The trophy is not necessarily awarded to the Hanoverian horse that attains the highest percentage score during the show, but rather it is awarded to the horse that advances furthest through the Championship rounds.

The breed classes are initially divided by age and gender. The winners and reserves of the young horse classes then advance to either the Filly Championship or the Colt Championship which results in the naming of the Champion and Reserve Young Horse Champion of the show. Concurrently the older horses compete for entry to either the Mare Championship or the Stallion Championship. In head to head competition, a team of judges chooses the Champion and Reserve Mature Horse Champion who then compete directly against the two winners from the Young Horse Championship. In a culminating event, these four horses (not necessarily Hanoverians) compete against each other for the undisputed title of Grand Champion at Dressage at Devon, the most prestigious honor of its kind.

The following list of annual winners includes some of the most prominent names in the modern American Hanoverian breed, including four--SPS Wintersong, EM Berlina, EM Capricia and Liberty Gold--that were named Dressage at Devon Grand Champion.

The Benchmark Perpetual Trophy

2017 winner HPMC Pentheselia Photo credit: © 3rd Shutter
Donated by a generous AHS member who wishes to remain anonymous, The Benchmark Farm Trophy recognizes mares that show exceptional jumping ability during their Mare Performance Test (MPT). This award is presented to the mare that achieves the highest combined score on the jumping part of the MPT in a calendar year.

Mares are awarded a score for “technique” and a score for “ability” during the free jumping part of the Hanoverian MPT. “Technique” refers to the form – the use of the body – the mare shows as she goes over the fences, especially the large oxer at the end of the chute. “Ability” refers to the innate talent and willingness of a mare to jump a fence of good size height and width. These two scores will be used to determine the winner(s).

I hope that each year’s winning mare sets a new benchmark of excellence in her jumping, which is such an important attribute of our wonderful Hanoverian breed.

Annonymous Benchmark Donor

The winning mare(s) may have been born in any country, and does not have to be Hanoverian—Thoroughbreds, Arabians, or any of the other Warmblood mares that are taking our testing are eligible. Also, there is no age limitation. Because it is likely that more than one mare may achieve the same high score in any calendar year, the prize will be awarded to all mares that tie for the highest score in a given year.

The details of the MPT High Score Jumping Award are as follows:

  • The MPT combined scores for "technique" and "ability" will be used to determine the winner(s).
  • Mares eligible for this award can be been born in any country, and do not have to be registered as Hanoverian—Thoroughbreds, Arabians, Anglo-Arabs and any of the other Warmblood mares entered in the testing are also qualified.
  • There are no age restrictions or considerations.

Setting the "Benchmark"

For this award, on behalf of our generous sponsor, a beautiful glass piece was commissioned that will reside in the AHS office, with the winners’ names to be engraved on plaques that will be placed on the base each year. On the glass is etched a lovely mare jumping a fence in beautiful form.

In honor of the award designer Phyllis Hamilton of Benchmark Farm Studio, the new award is known as the Benchmark Perpetual Trophy.

The AHS Board of Directors thanks our generous member for proposing and sponsoring this award, and congratulates the winning mares that showed such exceptional jumping ability in their performance tests!

Bari von Buedingen Memorial Trophy

Donated to the Society in the early 1990s, the Bari von Buedingen Memorial Trophy is a beautiful bronze depicting an exquisite Hanoverian mare and foal. This, the first of AHS’s perpetual trophies, is awarded in memory of noted breeder Bari von Buedingen, who, together with her husband, Dr. Richard von Buedingen, developed their Graf Bae Farm broodmare band into one of the best in the United States prior to her untimely death in 1993. At the request of the donor, the trophy is inscribed with the following tribute to Mrs. Von Buedingen: “Internationally recognized as an exceptional horsewoman and breeder of Hanoverian horses. May her enthusiasm, love, and dedication to the Hanoverian horse be remembered and perpetuated through this award.”

It is entirely fitting that this trophy is awarded to the highest-scoring Hanoverian mare(s) seen during the American Hanoverian Society’s annual inspection tour. First awarded in 1994, the complete list of winners, including ties, totals 22 mares, the majority of whom are now Elite Mares. Previous winners, including those with available photos, are as follows:

What is the American Hanoverian Society?

The American Hanoverian Society, Inc. (AHS) is a Hanoverian breed organization that is directed by its own board of directors, elected by its U.S. membership and operating under by-laws voted upon by the membership. Incorporated in 1978, it is an American-based, independent, non-profit corporation, headquartered in Lexington, KY. What began with only 40 members has grown since that time to become an internationally recognized organization.

The  Society's mission is to promote and support breeders, riders, owners, enthusiasts/fans of the Hanoverian and Rhineland horse in the U.S. We provide guidance, education, registration, and awards for our members.

How does the Society operate?

The Society operates as an affiliate of the German Hannoveraner Verband. While working independently in support of its membership, the Society enjoys a strong bond and a mutually beneficial working relationship with the Verband. The Verband endorses the AHS by-laws, breeding rules and the manner in which the AHS conducts bloodstock inspections, resulting in full Studbook reciprocity for US-approved stallions and mares. The AHS has representation and a vote on the Verband Board through our membership in Hanoverian International. The mutual cooperation and participation of the AHS with the Verband ensures that American Hanoverian breeders and owners receive timely information and remain firmly connected to the global Hanoverian breeding world.

The AHS office at the Kentucky Horse Park employs a full-time, experienced staff that is dedicated to supporting the membership and the general public with all matters related to Hanoverians. The AHS office is assisted by the elected Board, as well as by hard-working volunteers who serve on numerous committees.

Nationally, the AHS maintains an active and visible presence both within its own membership base and to the public at large. The AHS sends two highly trained and well-qualified judges to each of our many inspection sites, and offers a mare performance test at every location. The AHS Awards program is one of the most comprehensive offered to sport horse breeders in America and was expanded in 2012 to include a futurity offered at every inspection site resulting in $3,000 of yearend cash awards. The Society has a comprehensive internet and social media presence and produces world class publications, an informative direct mail program and national ad campaigns in leading horse publications. The AHS conducts an annual membership meeting that is held at differing locations throughout the US to allow the greatest number of members to participate.

What is the American Rhineland Studbook (ARS)?

In Germany

The home of the“Rheinisches Pferdestammbuch” (Rhineland Studbook) is the horse centre at Wickrath’s Castle.  Theodor Leuchten is in the chair and Martin Spoo handles the affairs of the breed association as manager. The Rhineland Studbook in Germany has approximately 4500 members.

In the US

The American Rhineland Studbook (ARS) is managed as a separate and distinct studbook by the American Hanoverian Society.  The ARS has adopted and implemented the breeding rules for its Rhineland Studbook similar to those in place for the Rhineland Studbook in Germany. In addition to implementing the Rhineland Studbook, the AHS will provide membership services, including combined inspection tours, for both the Hanoverian studbook and the Rhineland studbook beginning in 2016.
