Jumper Breeding Program (JBP)

Overview

In 2005, The AHS established the North American Jumper Breeding Program (JBP), which is based in part on the successful experience of the Programm Hannoveraner Springpferdezucht (PHS) established in 1993 in Germany. A cooperative effort between the AHS and the two regional Hanoverian breeding clubs in Canada, the Jumper Breeding Program is intended to promote the breeding of high-quality Hanoverian show jumping horses in North America. To be selected for the program, mares and stallions must have both an appropriate jumping pedigree and demonstrated jumping ability or offspring with demonstrated jumping ability.

Appropriate Jumping Pedigree

The following guidelines set forth what is generally considered to be an “appropriate jumping pedigree.” To some extent, these guidelines may be applied more strictly to stallions than to mares. First, the sire of the horse in question must be a “jumping sire”, preferably meeting the requirements as set forth above for the stallions elected for the program. Next, the sire of the dam and the sire of the granddam should either be both jumping sires or at a minimum one of the two should be a jumping sire, also preferably meeting the JBP requirements as set forth above for stallion qualifications. Recognizing that some sires are multi-talented which makes for many variables, the JBP committee will consider every application very carefully. In addition, any mare having both parents selected for the program will be deemed to have an appropriate pedigree.

Stallion Criteria

The criteria used by the PHS for selecting the stallions has been adopted for the North American Program. In addition to having an appropriate jumping pedigree, a stallion must meet one or more of the following criteria:

  • A jumping index of at least 125 in the Stallion Performance Test
  • A jumping score of 8.5 or higher in the Stallion Performance Test
  • A successful competition record, examples of which include placings in show jumping at USEF 1.40m or above (five times in first to third place) or Equine Canada equivalent; participation in international levels of competition or qualification for the World Breeding Championships for Young Jumpers or the Bundeschampionat in Germany
  • Offspring with successful competition records at the USEF 1.40m or above or CEF equivalent
  • A jumping breeding value of at least 120
The committee primarily relies on stallion performance tests and breeding values for acceptance into the JBP, and strongly encourages owners of stallions not otherwise included to provide the committee with the competition records of their stallion or his offspring. These records will be evaluated, and if sufficient, may permit the inclusion of the stallion in the program. In addition to the stallions already selected for the PHS, the current list of activated North American stallions selected for the program is set forth on the following page, and stallions in this directory have the appropriate JBP logo on their individual page.

Mare Criteria

The JBP committee has also adopted similar criteria to that used by the PHS for selecting the mares for the program. Mares that meet one or more of the following criteria will be selected for the program and have the JBP logo added to their registration papers:

  • Any mare with four (4) generations of jumping pedigree
  • Any mare with an overall jumping score of at least 8.0 in the Mare Performance Test and an appropriate jumping pedigree
  • A breed value index of at least 125
  • A successful competition record in show jumping at USEF 1.35m or above or the Equine Canada equivalent (five times in first to third place); qualifications for World Breeding Championships for Young Jumpers or Bundeschampionat in Germany
  • Any mare with two (2) offspring with successful competition records, one with placings first to fifth in USEF 1.35m or above (or Equine Canada equivalent), and one with at least one placing first to fifth in USEF 1.40m or above (or Equine Canada equivalent). These offspring must have acceptable registration papers from a member organization of the World Breeding Federation for Sport Horses.
  • Any mare with close relatives (e.g., full or half siblings from the same dam with successful show jumping competition records as above)
The committee primarily relies upon MPT data, and strongly encourages owners of mares not otherwise included in the program to provide the committee with the appropriate additional information so that the mare may be considered. In 2023 the Society adopted criteria used by the HV for the JBP Star Programs for mares.
