Pair Garners Multiple Wins in California Horse Trials
Ping Pong, a 13 year old Hanoverian mare and owner/rider Julie Flettner won the CIC1* Galway Downs International Horse Trials, Temecula, CA on March 28, 2013. This was accomplished competing against a field of 28 starters. The success was on the heels of another victory on March 1, 3013 at Twin Rivers Winter Horse Trials, Paso Robles, in the Preliminary PR division. This talented team also placed 7th at the CCI* at Twin Rivers in April and was the highest placed horse ridden by an amateur in that division.
Ping Pong (Pablito-Knowbody's Fool/Kalypso) was bred by Edgar & Susan Schutte of Rainbow Equus Meadows, Lincoln, CA. Ping Pong was purchased by Julie Flettner in 2009 and competed with Julie for the first time at the May Woodside Horse Trials that year in the beginner novice division. The duo has been extremely successful in the past few years, with wins in the training three-day event at the Galway Downs International Three-Day Event in November 2011 and at the $15,000 Woodside Preliminary Challenge in May 2012 in the Preliminary Rider division.
The 2012 Woodside Preliminary Challenge was the pair's fifth start at preliminary level and the first one at which they’d finished cross-country under the optimum time. “I was definitely nervous tonight, and [Ping Pong] just went on with it. She really rose to the occasion,” said Flettner. “Even when they played the National Anthem, she stood there looking at the flag.” Flettner, an optometrist who works in a veterans’ clinic in Santa Rosa, Calif., trains with Matt Brown.
